The Minnesota Vikings can salvage a little of their dismal season by beating the reigning Super Bowl champions. If the game were being played at the Metrodome, they might actually have a shot—the Baltimore Ravens are 1-5 on the road this season.
The problem is, at home the Ravens are a very different team—at M&T Bank Stadium they are 5-1. To make the situation worse, the Vikings are 0-5-1 on the road this season. Baltimore has an extra incentive because it is in the running for the last playoff spot in the AFC. According to Pro Football Reference, the Ravens are currently the sixth, and final, seed.
Yeah, this would appear to be the perfect setup for a Baltimore win.
A quick look at common opponents doesn’t shed much light. Both the Vikings and Ravens have played the Steelers, Browns, Bears and Packers. Baltimore has a 2-4 record—with two games against the Steelers and Browns, which it split. The Vikings are 2-3-1, with wins over the Bears and Steelers.

The Packers beat the Ravens 19-17 in Week 6.
According to head coach Leslie Frazier on Wednesday during his press conference posted on Vikings.com, Matt Cassel will most likely get the start at quarterback for Christian Ponder. Ponder did not pass the tests required for him to get back on the practice field, and Frazier doesn’t think there is enough time for him to be ready for Sunday.
Another surprising move Frazier announced is that linebacker Audie Cole will remain the starter as the middle linebacker. Erin Henderson, who has not played in the past two games after being arrested on suspicion of DWI, will move back to the weak-side linebacker, the position he started 10 games last season.

When the Vikings Have the Ball
A good place to start for the Vikings, would be to look at what the Packers did on offense to beat the Ravens at home. Green Bay used a balanced attack behind 120 rushing yards from running back Eddie Lacy in 23 carries.
Quarterback Aaron Rodgers passed for 315 yards, and Mason Crosby kicked four field goals, the longest from 50 yards.
No doubt, the Vikings are as good or better on two of those fronts—with running back Adrian Peterson and kicker Blair Walsh.
A crude comparison between Cassel’s performance last Sunday against Chicago to Rodgers’ performance in Week 6 against the Ravens is very interesting.
Quarterback ComparisonQuarterback Opponent Comp Att Yds TD Int Rating
Aaron Rodgers Ravens Week 6 17 32 315 1 1 84.8
Matt Cassel Bears Week 13 20 33 243 1 1 80.7
ESPN
Before anyone makes a comment about this being an apples and oranges comparison, I realize that. It’s just weird how close the statistics were for the two quarterbacks.
Give Peterson the Ball As Much As Possible
If Peterson can effectively run the ball, then the passing game might open up for Cassel and the Vikings.
Data from Stat Milk
The Vikings offense should continue to revolve around Peterson. Last week against the Bears, Peterson had his best game of the season, rushing for 211 yards on 35 carries. Ironically, it was the same week last season when Peterson had his best game of the season. He rushed for 210 yards against the Packers.
Gregory Shamus/Getty Images
It was his performance over the final four games that led the Vikings to four straight wins and a playoff berth. Perhaps it just takes Peterson 12 games to get warmed up.

Weeks 1-12 112.4 7
Weeks 13 – 17 172.2 5
ESPN
The Vikings should strive to get Peterson 30 or more carries against the Ravens. If that happens, it will accomplish two things—keep the Vikings defense on the sideline, and keep the clock moving to shorten up the game.
Make Rookie Wide Receiver Cordarrelle Patterson a Big Part of the Game Plan
Cordarrelle Patterson finally became a triple threat with his 32-yard touchdown run against the Bears. He now has four touchdowns on the season—two on kick returns, one touchdown reception and one rushing.
With both Patterson and Peterson on the field together—dare we dub them the “P&P Boys”—the Ravens will have to account for both. That should open things up for wide receivers Jerome Simpson and Greg Jennings and tight end John Carlson.
When the Ravens Have the Ball
Stats from NFL.com
Surprisingly, the Ravens have not been that effective running the ball this season. They are on a three-year slide that has seen their rushing average per game fall each season.

Unfortunately, the Vikings defense has not been as effective against the run. Currently ranked 23rd in the NFL, the Vikings are on a five-year downward trend in the ranking of their rush defense.

Don’t Let Ray Rice Get Going
The Vikings will need to keep tabs on running back Ray Rice. Rice is an effective pass-catcher, and he is the Ravens’ second-leading receiver with 43 receptions for 213 yards to go with his 482 rushing yards.
David Banks/Getty Images
With Henderson back as the weak-side linebacker, the Vikings will be stronger in the second line of defense than with Marvin Mitchell. This will help to contain Rice.
Give Xavier Rhodes the Top Assignment
According to an article from 1500ESPN, before the season started, cornerback Chris Cook had aspirations of finally being the shutdown corner the Vikings have been hoping for—that flat out has not happened. Against the Bears, Cook gave up two long touchdowns to wide receiver Alshon Jeffery. Jeffery finished with 12 catches for a franchise-record 249 yards.
On the other side of the field, Xavier Rhodes shut down wide receiver Brandon Marshall. Marshall finished with just four catches for 45 yards. It was the fewest catches and yards for Marshall in six career games against the Vikings.
As I broke down in my previous article, Rhodes has developed into the Vikings’ best cornerback.
Hannah Foslien/Getty Images
Rhodes should line up opposite Torrey Smith—no matter where he is on the field. Smith leads the Ravens with 54 catches for 952 yards.
That leaves Cook to cover the Ravens’ top scoring threat—wide receiver Marlon Brown. Brown only has 29 catches on the season, but five of them have been for touchdowns. Undoubtedly, no matter how the Vikings cornerbacks line up, quarterback Joe Flacco will most likely be looking to pick on Cook.
Sure the Ravens are favored to win this game—Sporting News has them as early seven-point favorites—but if Peterson can carry the team like he did last season at this time, if Cassel can provide the same kind of spark as he did in the second half of the game against the Bears, if Patterson can be effective in more than one phase of the game and if Rhodes can shut down the Ravens’ passing game, then the Vikings have a great shot.
Just in case you weren’t counting, that was four pretty big ifs.
NFL Week 14 and we will see the Minnesota Vikings travel to Baltimore, Maryland to take on the Baltimore Ravens. The game has a start time of 1:00 pm (Eastern) and be will televised on FOX. Current odds have Baltimore listed as 6 point favorites, while the total sits at 41.5.
Analysis: Minnesota is 2-1-1 since they had lost 7 straight and they are off a nice 23-20 OT win over Chicago last week. Matt Cassel is expected to be the starting QB after throwing for 243 yards in relief of Christian Ponder, who left the game against the Bears after suffering a concussion. Adrian Peterson has had a tough season both on and off the field, but leads the NFL with 1,208 rushing yards and has 357 in the last two games. Peterson rushed for 143 yards when the Brett Favre-led Vikings beat the Ravens 33-31 in 2009 in the most recent meeting between the teams. Defensive end Jared Allen hasn’t been the pass-rushing force he’s been in the past with a career-low six sacks after having a combined 34 over the previous two seasons. Overall the Viking defense has struggled ranking 30th in total yards, 30th vs the pass and last in the league in points allowed (30.5 ppg).
Baltimore would like ta shot at defending its Super Bowl crown but first things first, they must secure a postseason spot. The Ravens are looking for their first three-game winning streak of the campaign and they come in off a hard fought 22-20 win over Pittsburgh on Thanksgiving night. In the off-season, Joe Flacco signed a huge contract, but he hasn’t really lived up to it this year as he has completed 59.8% of his passes for 2993 yards, with 15 Tds and 14 INTs. The Ravens’ offense could get a boost if tight end Dennis Pitta is ready to make his season debut Sunday after suffering a hip injury during training camp. Pitta set career highs with 61 receptions, 669 yards and seven TDs last season. Wide receiver Torrey Smith is 48 yards shy of his first career 1,000-yard season and has caught four of Joe Flacco’s 15 touchdown passes. The Raven defense is a solid unit once again and they come in 6th vs the run, which is key when about to take on AP. K Justin Tucker has made 27 consecutive field goals, the best current streak in the league.
Pick: Gonna take the Vikings in this one. The Ravens have played better of late, but they don’t have allot of blowout capability right now. Minnesota has also played better of late, especially on defense and they should slow down Baltimore enough to get the cover here.

MovieNFL Free Picks: Minnesota Vikings at Baltimore Ravens Betting
What pro football bettors need to know about betting Minnesota Vikings at Baltimore Ravens on Sunday (12/08/13) – a free pick from Pregame.com’s Marco D’Angelo, with Bryan Leonard and Ken Thomson.
The Ravens are building up a little momentum.
After wins over the New York Jets and Pittsburgh Steelers the last two weeks, the Ravens (6-6) have a .500 record for the first time since October and control their destiny in the playoff race.
Beating the Vikings (3-8-1) would give the Ravens their first three-game winning streak of the season and also set up a critical three-game stretch against the Lions, Patriots and Bengals to finish the regular season.
The Ravens are currently the No. 6 seed in the AFC, but they have little room for error. Losing just one game could put them on the outside looking in of on the playoff picture.
“We’re a 6-6 football team fighting for a playoff spot, and we need to win the rest of them, and it starts with this one right here,” quarterback Joe Flacco said.
Matchups To Watch
LT Eugene Monroe vs. DE Jared Allen
Allen has been one of the NFL’s premier pass rushers throughout his career, putting up at least nine sacks in eight of the last nine seasons, and double digit sack totals for the last six seasons. Monroe will likely get tasked with keeping Allen way from Flacco, which is no easy task. Monroe has been on a roll lately, and has been the Ravens’ top offensive player the last two weeks, according to Pro Football Focus.
CB Jimmy Smith vs. WR Cordarrelle Patterson
Smith has been cleared to play after suffering a concussion against the Steelers on Thanksgiving, and he will likely match up against the big rookie wide receiver. Patterson is 6-foot-2, 220 pounds, and creates matchup nightmares for smaller defensive backs. Smith has the size to take away that advantage for Patterson, and he has also played lockdown defense in recent weeks.
S Matt Elam vs. QB Matt Cassel
The Ravens picked off Cassel twice when they faced him last season in Kansas City, and they hope to get the better of him again this week. Cassel is slated to start because Christian Ponder suffered a concussion last week, and Elam has his eyes set on his first career interception.
Keys To The Game
Stop the running game
The Vikings offense is built around the NFL’s leading rusher Adrian Peterson, who has put up historic numbers over the course of his seven-year career. Peterson is coming off a 211-yard game last week against the Bears, but he is also battling a thigh injury that has limited his practice time this week. Stopping him is the top priority for the Ravens, and they will likely stack the box to force Minnesota to beat them through the air.
Find the end zone
The offense has made strides in recent weeks, scoring on six of their nine possessions last week against the Steelers. The problem, however, is that the Ravens have struggled in the red zone and had to settle for field goals. Kicker Justin Tucker has nine field goals in the last two weeks, and a focus for the offense is to put the ball in the end zone rather than settling for three points. Getting tight end Dennis Pitta back in the lineup could help in that department.
Capitalize on home field
The Ravens have been a different team at home this season, and currently have a 5-1 record at M&T Bank Stadium. Sunday’s contest with Minnesota marks the end of a three-game home stretch, and they need to capitalize on one of their final two games in Baltimore this season.
The Minnesota Vikings are 0-5-1 on the road. The Baltimore Ravens are 5-1 at home. Sunday, the two teams play, and it’s in Baltimore. Sorry, Minnesota. The game takes place at 1 p.m. ET, with the Ravens needing a win to hold on to the AFC’s six-seed in the playoff hunt, and the Vikings needing a loss to stay alive in its hunt for the No. 1 overall draft pick. Basically, the writing’s on the wall for this one, and much of the fantasy situations follow suit:
Vikings
Start in every league: Adrian Peterson, Blair Walsh
Start if you’re desperate: …
Bench: Matt Cassel, Christian Ponder, Toby Gerhart, Cordarrelle Patterson, Jerome Simpson, Greg Jennings, John Carlson, Defense/special teams
Yes, the Ravens are one of the best teams against opposing running backs. Sure. That’s awesome. If you’re considering benching Peterson, you’re still dumb. … Walsh’s production flagged a bit in the middle of the year, but he’s bounced back lately, with at least two field goals and nine fantasy points in four straight games.
It appears Cassel will start at quarterback for Minnesota, with Ponder benched, and he has more upside, but neither one is worth even idle consideration in fantasy. … Gerhart fell back to basically no relevance Sunday, and it seems he’ll stay there. … Maybe Patterson has a big-ish game. Maybe Simpson does, maybe Jennings does. The odds are that one very easily could. But you don’t know which, and you don’t need to be staking your fantasy playoffs on that choice. … Carlson has averaged 7.5 fantasy points a game since Kyle Rudolph got hurt; that would rank seventh among tight ends if he did it all season. Still, he was barely in the league before that. You can’t count on him. … The Vikings’ defense literally has one total point since Week 7. That’s insanely bad.
Ravens
Start in every league: Ray Rice, Torrey Smith, Justin Tucker, Defense/special teams
Start if you’re desperate: Joe Flacco
Bench: Bernard Pierce, Marlon Brown, Jacoby Jones, Ed Dickson, Dallas Clark
It’s been a wildly frustrating year for Rice owners; he’s only missed one game, but has averaged barely over seven fantasy points a game when he’s played. Still, he’s getting the touches, and the Vikings’ defense is terrible; he could have a good bounce-back game. … Smith has scored at least seven points in five straight, and in 10 of 12 games this season. Again, the Vikings don’t really stop anyone. … Tucker has averaged almost 15 fantasy points a game in his last three, and hasn’t missed a field goal since Week 2. He’s been incredibly good. … The Ravens’ defense was shut out against Pittsburgh on Thanksgiving, but had 15 the week before and has been on the edge of the top 10 all season. Facing a terrible quarterback, it should be fine.
Flacco has averaged only 12.4 fantasy points per game this season; that number falls to 10.25 in his last four. Facing Minnesota’s defense bumps him up to a high-end QB2, but you can’t vault him much higher than that.
After 23 fantasy points in Weeks 2 and 3 combined, Pierce has barely averaged two since. He’s unusable. … Also unusable are Brown, Jones, Dickson and Clark, who have combined for two big games total in the last two months.

In their next-to-last home game, the Ravens host Minnesota (1 p.m. ET, Fox) in Baltimore on Sunday. With two straight victories, the Ravens (6-6 SU, 6-6 ATS) have edged into the second and final wild-card spot in the AFC.
The Vikings (3-8-1 SU, 6-6 ATS) are out of playoff contention, but in their last two games, they have damaged the postseason hopes of Green Bay and Chicago. The question is, after an overtime tie against the Packers and an overtime win against the Bears, can Minnesota find the energy to challenge the defending Super Bowl champions on their home turf?
Line: Ravens –6.5 Total: 43.
Line movement: The Ravens opened as 6-point favorites. They still were at a some shops on Friday, while others adjusted to -6.5. MGM was the highest at Ravens -7. The total moved down to 42.5 by the end of the week after opening at 43.5, though you could find the number at 42, 42.5 and 43 depending on the shop.
Live Odds: Check an updated Vikings-Ravens betting line
History and trends: The Ravens are 5-1 straight-up and 4-2 against the spread at home this season.
The Vikings are 5-4 as underdogs in 2013. They are winless in six road games (0-5-1), but they have covered in 3 of 6 contests as visitors.
The Ravens are 0-2 against the NFC North this season, with losses at Chicago and vs. Green Bay. The Vikings are 1-1 against the AFC North, defeating Pittsburgh in London and losing at home to Cleveland in September.
The Vikings are 9-3-1 to the OVER. By contrast, only four Baltimore games have gone OVER (one push).
Vikings outlook: Vikings star tailback Adrian Peterson has turned in two strong performances in a row, racking up a combined 357 yards on 67 carries in this span. Peterson (1,208 yards, 10 TDs) is dealing with a groin injury, but he has not missed a game this season. Even if he isn’t 100 percent, the NFL’s leading rusher is still the focal point of the ground game and the key to the Minnesota offense.
With Christian Ponder (concussion) ruled out for Week 14, the Viking will start Matt Cassel at quarterback. Cassel has been serviceable, completing 77-of-121 passes for 857 yards with five TDs and four interceptions. Like Ponder, though, Cassel has had a propensity for producing turnovers at inopportune times.
The Vikings’ receiving corps is intriguing. All three of Greg Jennings’ TD catches have come from Cassel. In addition to Jennings, rookie Cordarrelle Patterson has game-breaking ability, and veteran Jerome Simpson has special athletic ability.
The Ravens are allowing the sixth-fewest rushing yards per game of any team in the league (100.1). Their pass defense is solid, too. Since surrendering seven TD passes to Peyton Manning in Week 1, the Ravens have allowed a respectable 12 passing TDs in their last 11 games.
Ravens outlook: The Ravens’ 22-20 win vs. Pittsburgh on Nov. 28 marked the first time since the first weekend of October that Baltimore had exceeded 20 points in a game. However, the Ravens scored just one touchdown in that contest, with the bulk of their points coming from five Justin Tucker field goals.
Numerous problems have hurt the Baltimore offense. The Ravens’ ground game has been a huge disappointment, as tailbacks Ray Rice and Bernard Pierce are both gaining less than three yards per attempt. The passing game hasn’t hit its stride, either. Quarterback Joe Flacco has been sacked 39 times and has thrown a career-worst 14 interceptions.
Perhaps Baltimore can build some confidence against a struggling Minnesota defense that is allowing more than three offensive touchdowns per game. Though the Vikings held the Bears to 20 points in Week 13, Chicago gained 480 yards and racked up 7.4 yards per play, with wideout Alshon Jeffery setting a club record for single-game receiving yardage (249). The Vikings could have trouble with the speed of Ravens wideout Torrey Smith (54 catches, 952 yards, four TDs), who has emerged as Baltimore’s most consistent offensive weapon this season.
Handicapping tools: ATS standings | Power ratings | Matchup analysis and injury report
Weather: 32 degrees with a 92 percent chance of precipitation. Check wunderground.com for an updated weather forecast.
The Linemakers’ lean: On one hand, the Ravens have stayed UNDER in five of their six home games. We also have a cold weather situation with winds expected to be 10-15 miles per hour. On the other hand, the Vikings give up 30 points a game which creates caution with the UNDER 42.5 thinking. However, the Ravens have dictated pace all season at home and have covered five of their six home games. This number is a little too high to side with the home team though the Ravens’ average score of 20-12 at home this season wouldn’t be a shock. Best bet looks to be the UNDER.
The Minnesota Vikings (3-8-1) visit the Baltimore Ravens (6-6) for the 4th time ever in a matchup scheduled to kickoff at noon. The Week 14 contest is the 5th game ever between the Vikings and Ravens having split the series 2-2.
In the last matchup between the Ravens and Vikings in 2009, Minnesota topped Baltimore, 33-31, on a FG in the final 2 minutes and a 143-yard effort by RB Adrian Peterson. Vikings DT Kevin Williams registered 2 sacks on QB Joe Flacco in the win. The Vikings are coming off back-to-back overtime games for the 1st time since 1995, including a 23-20 win over division rival Chicago Bears in Week 13. Peterson rushed for 211 yards in the win and surpassed the 10,000 rushing yard mark for his career.

Over the last 3 weeks, the Vikings rank 1st in the NFL in 3rd down defense holding opponents to 23.7% (9/38) on 3rd downs: 1) Minnesota Vikings, 23.7% (9/38) 2) Cleveland Browns, 27.3% (12/44) 3) Carolina Panthers, 27.8% (10/36)
NORSEMAN NOTABLES
• RB Adrian Peterson surpassed the 10,000 career rushing yard mark with a 211-yard effort vs. Chicago. Peterson, playing in his 101st career game, became the 3rd fastest to reach 10,000 rushing yards behind Eric Dickerson (91 games) and Jim Brown (98 games).
• DE Brian Robison has recorded a sack in 3 consecutive games and has 5.0 sacks over the last 5 games.
• Vikings KR/WR Cordarrelle Patterson became the only rookie in Vikings history to score a TD 3 different ways (receiving, rushing and returning). Patterson is the 6th WR all-time in team history to rush for a TD.
• Since 2011, special teams coordinator Mike Priefer’s first year in Minnesota, the Vikings are tied with the Denver Broncos and the Tennessee Titans for the most combined kick return and punt return TDs with 6 (4 kick returns, 2 punt returns). The 4 KR TDs lead the NFL.
• Patterson’s 1,088 kickoff return yards are the most in the NFL in 2013 and ranks 3rd all-time among Vikings rookies. His 109-yard kickoff return TD against Green Bay on 10/27/13 was the longest kickoff return in NFL history. He needs 258 kickoff return yards to break the Vikings single-season record (Buster Rhymes, 1,345 in 1985).
• Peterson rushed for 211 yards on a career high and team record 35 carries vs. Chicago, marking his league leading 5th 100+ yard rushing game this season and his 5th career game with 200+ rushing yards. Peterson’s 5 games of 200+ rushing yards are tied for 2nd all-time with Tiki Barber, trailing only trailing O.J. Simpson (6).
• Vikings K Blair Walsh earned NFC Special Teams Player of th Week in Week 12 after going a perfect 4-for-4 on FGs, including a 47-yarder in regulation and a 35-yarder in OT, and added 5 kickoff touchbacks, both season highs. This is Walsh’s 4th POW award, joining Gary Anderson and Mitch Berger for most in team history in only his 2nd season.
• Over the past 4 weeks, TE John Carlson has 246 receiving yards, the 2nd-most in the NFL by a TE during that span (Rob Gronkowski, 276).
• CB Xavier Rhodes recorded his 16th pass defensed vs. Chicago, ranking 2nd all-time in passes defensed by Vikings rookie (Orlando Thomas, 19 in 1995).
• Peterson, with 1,208 rushing yards, has more rushing yards than 10 NFL teams entering Week 14.

• This will mark the 5th game the Vikings have played the Ravens, the 2nd-least amount of games against a current NFL team (Houston, 4)
The Ravens could be without their best pass rusher when the Minnesota Vikings come to town Sunday, as Elvis Dumervil missed practice for the third straight day, and is officially listed as doubtful for the game. There is certainly an argument to be made that, if Doom needs to miss a game to heal up, this is the one to miss.
In other “will he or won’t he” news, Ravens fans are once again eager to see if #88 steps on the field for the first time since the Super Bowl this weekend. The Ravens have until Saturday afternoon to add Dennis Pitta to the 53-man roster; if they don’t do it this week, they’ll have until Wednesday if they want to use him at all this year. Pitta practiced fully this week (he’s not the injury reports because he’s not currently a member of the active roster), and with John Harbaugh saying that he has a “reasonable chance” to play, the bet here is that he does.
“It felt good all week,” said Pitta when asked about practicing on his injured hip. “It’s nice to get back in and go through full practices and stuff. We’ll see.”
As for the Vikings, they’ll be without Christian Ponder, meaning that Matt Cassel will make the start at QB. In yesterday’s injury report, I detailed how miserable his life has been when he plays the Ravens, so that bodes well for Baltimore. While Adrian Peterson is listed as questionable, you can be sure that he’ll be playing. However, another big absence for the Vikings is tight end Kyle Rudolph – considering the way Heath Miller treated the Ravens on Thanksgiving (8 rec, 86 yards), it’s nice that the opponent will be without their top weapon in the middle of the field (whether it would be his first action since Week 9 or not).
